Steps for Conducting Fire Drills with Kids
1. Preparation
• Explain the Importance: Start by explaining the importance of fire drills and how they can help everyone stay safe.
• Show the Plan: Go over the escape plan with them. Show them the floor plan, the routes, and the meeting place.
2. Sound the Alarm
• Simulate the Alarm: Use a whistle or a bell to simulate the sound of a smoke alarm so they can recognize it.
• Practice Listening: Teach them to stop what they’re doing and listen for instructions when they hear the alarm.
3. Escaping
• Crawl Low Under Smoke: Teach kids to crawl low under smoke to avoid inhalation.
• Check Doors for Heat: Show them how to use the back of their hand to check if a door is hot before opening it.
• Use Exits: Practice using both primary and secondary exits from each room.
• Never Hide: Emphasize that they should never hide during a fire.
4. Meeting Place
• Go to the Meeting Place: Practice going to the designated meeting place outside the home.
• Count Heads: Once at the meeting place, practice counting to make sure everyone is there.
5. Emergency Contacts
• Practice Calling 911: Teach them how to call 911 and what information to provide (name, address, type of emergency).
6. Reinforcement
• Discuss What Went Well: After the drill, discuss what went well and what could be improved.
• Reinforce Safety Tips: Reinforce key safety tips, such as not returning inside for toys or pets
